Friend's at AU, For my 65th birthday, I had planned a big party. Instead, I got a grandson! Raphael is well worth the price, but I always hate to miss a party. I am going to make up for it by celebrating another big day. On November 21, I will be exactly 66.6 years old! Please join me at the Libby House, 724 East Edgeware Road (on your GPS, that may be Northeast or North Edgeware) for food, games, entertainment, Karaoke, and mostly fun and friendship. We’ll open the doors at 4:00 p.m. and keep going as long as we keep going. The Libby House is an 1887 Queen Anne Victorian whose age and architecture have earned it status as a Los Angeles City Landmark. It is currently undergoing restoration, but much of the original artistry is apparent. This house will likely be available to the Los Angeles freethought community for many events in years to come, and I hope you will want to be there for the first of many. We will further tempt the beast by asking each adult to contribute $16.66, $6.66 for kids. This will go to the Atheists United general fund. If you’d like to bring a personal gift, please express that desire with an additional contribution to Atheists United. I hope to see you there! Bobbie

September General Meeting General Meeting Sunday, September 27, 11:00 a.m. Autumnal Equinox Celebration It's party time! As the days grow shorter, the sun passes the equator, and we celebrate the coming of fall with a party! Diane Hart will emcee Freethought Trivia, a game that is as much fun to watch as it is to play. Volunteers will compete for prizes, and the audience will exercise their right to laugh at them, as this activity is designed for people who are really good sports. The grand prize winner will get a two pound coin issued by the Royal Mint of England, commemorating Charles Darwin's bicentennial, complete with the collector's jacket. These coins were never circulated and are not easy to come by. We will be collecting eye-glass donations at this meeting that we will deliver to Unite for Sight, which refurbishes then distributes eye-glasses to clinic patients in West Africa. We will accept glasses in any prescription, in any condition, loose lenses, empty frames, even sun glasses and eye glass cases.

General Meeting Sunday, July 26, 11:00 a.m. Guest Speaker: Richard Haynes of Atheist Nexus Richard Haynes is a writer and public speaker, as well as the executive director of AtheistNexus.org, the world's largest social networking site exclusively for nontheists. "Brother Richard" was raised in a nonreligious home, but as a teenage runaway he had a "born again" experience. Almost immediately, he became an evangelist and personally led hundreds of individuals to Christianity. Richard went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies, and became an associate minister in a 12,000 member mega-church. In 1993, Richard and his wife Angela made the agonizing decision to leave their church, which was engulfed with scandal. Terrified and unemployed, they began their long and arduous journey to rationality and nontheism. Richard is now secularly ordained and has dedicated himself to building nontheist communities, and encouraging others to "come out" of the atheist closet. His talk to Atheists United, "You Built It. We Came. Now What?" will address this subject. "Brother Richard" lives with his family in Atlanta, Georgia. He writes a blog: LifeWithoutFaith.com , Center for Inquiry Los Angeles 4773 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA, 90027 This event is free and open to the public. Lunch is provided, donations welcome. General Meeting Sunday, June 28, 11:00 a.m. Summer Solstice Party Hits the Right Notes “Roll out those lazy, hazy crazy days of summer,” and go “My Way,” on the “Sunny Side of the Street.” That’s right, folks, it’s time for the Summer Solstice Karaoke Barbeque at the AU General meeting. “June Is Busting out all Over,” and with the able accompaniment of George Lippman the keyboard, you can “Sing, sing a song,” for fun and prizes or listen and judge with your applause. To make sure the voices of atheism carry far and wide, all attendees are asked to bring old cell phones and accessories (chargers, batteries, matched or mismatched) to be donated to Hopeline. They will be rematched and repaired, where necessary, and given to victims of domestic violence. Your old cell phone could save a life. Ask your friends and neighbors to send theirs with you. You'll be doing them a favor, and you'll make another home safer. Center for Inquiry Los Angeles 4773 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA, 90027 This event is free and open to the public. General Meeting Sunday, May 24, 11:00 a.m. Atheists United’s Own Godless Girl Remembered Queen Silver, a founding member of Atheists United, was a socialist-feminist-a theist activist from the time she was four years old. William Jennings Bryan turned his back when pictures of a teenage Queen were held up to him, as he entered the Scopes trial proceedings. In those teen years, her leadership in a Fairfax High student protest over religious practices inspired Cecil B. DeMille’s 1929 silent film, The Godless Girl. Dr. Milt Timmons, retired head of the Department of Film at LA Valley College will present this movie at our next meeting. Timmons, also a founding member, will give us the perspective of an expert in cinema, as well as the insight of a friend of Queen.
