Atheists in the North of England

Find other 'strong' atheists* in your area, secularists, freethinkers or secular humanists to discuss your opinions and, if new to atheism, learn answers to religious attack and arguments for the wisdom and good sense of atheism.

Gather on-line or at meetups in your own area to discuss beliefs and philosophies, attitudes and ideas on how atheists can influence ideas and policies on which we have distinctive opinions - and enjoy making new friends in the process.

*'strong' atheists do not believe in god, think superstition and sectarianism are harmful and should be critised and opposed for its harmful effects. We know that there are good people who are religious just as there are good people who are not, but we do not respect the ideas.

  • There is so much atheist wisdom and wit -how come it has been suppressed for so long. Nothing to do with social control by the church of course or the collusion between politics and religion and the inequality of women in a violent macho society!

  • When all other arguments have fallen this one is left, but comfort in fantasy is no substitute for the comfort of knowing that human beings are resillient, and when one has to, most human beings can and do cope with adversity without superstition.

  • Loads of links to humour, wit, verse, cartoons, videos etc. from the famous to grass roots activists.

  • There is lots of interesting stuff here, including the 'Current debate on the BHA policy of 'accommodations' that will bring religious instruction back into schools

  • The hidden history of atheism includes the many women freethinkers, abolitionists and women's rights campaigners who had to use various euphemisms such as 'deist' pilloried and abuse, they were atheists and some of them very strong atheists.
