About Copenhagen Atheists Meetup Group

FAQ

  • Should I join Københavns Ateist Meetup Group?
If you are an atheist, agnostic, agnostic atheist, Bright, freethinker, secular humanist, or nontheist, and you live in the Greater Copenhagen area, yes! If you'd like to convert our members to your religion, no!

You may also wish to join if you frequently visit the area, are thinking of moving, or have other connections to Copenhagen or the surrounding area.
  • Of course I am an atheist. But why is it important to join a group like Københavns Ateist Meetup Group?
Friendly Atheist's blog makes a great argument for the importance of community with like-minded individuals. Read it here.
  • I'm not an atheist, agnostic, or any of that, but I'd like to meet people who are, learn more about you, and understand your philosophy. May I join?
You are welcome to join, as long as you respect that this is not a debate group or a conversion group. That goes both ways. We're not here to "convert" you to atheism, and you shouldn't be here to convert us either. Debates may certainly arise, but it's not our purpose.

I expect you may be dissappointed to discover there is no "atheist philosophy." An atheist is a person who does not believe there is a god. Beyond that, we believe all manner of different things, have different ideologies, and may agree on little else.

  • Are your meetings in English? / Why is your site in English?
Because this group has attracted a high percentage of non-Danes, this site and our meetings are in English. If you are more comfortable using Danish on our message boards or in emails to group management, you are welcome to do so. Speaking Danish at our meetings is not forbidden, but you can expect it to limit the number of people who will be involved in your conversation.

  • As a theist, I find the very existence of this group offensive! To whom should I rant and rave?
I wish to state as strongly as possible that this group was not created with the intention to offend anyone. Honestly, I don't really understand this position. I am not offended that Christians convene at church, that some Wiccans meet in covens, or even that members of the Danske Folkeparti talk to each other on occasion.

We are not getting together in the hopes of destroying your religion. We are not meeting to convince people to become apostates. We are convening at pubs around Copenhagen to meet other people like us. If that offends you, that's unfortunately a very personal issue on your end, and ranting to me, staff of Meetup.com or random people you meet on the street isn't going to do anyone any good. If you aren't an atheist, this group has nothing to do with you. There is nothing to be offended by.

This group exists without acting in contravention of any U.S. or Danish law, nor any of the terms and conditions of Meetup.com. In other, very blunt words, there's nothing you can do about it. The best course of action is to move on with your life.

  • My question isn't here. How can I ask it?
