This kind of goes along with Jaime's Statement of Goals, but I feel that topic is heading elsewhere and this deserves its own discussion... At the film we screened on May 1st in Cedar Rapids, the discussion touched on doing some volunteer work, or community service (if I remember correctly).
Today after work, myself and about a dozen other coworkers participated in our yearly Adopt a Highway cleaning of a small stretch of highway. We followed that up with pizza and drinks! I think this would be something worth discussing. Any thoughts? |

I agree. This would be a worthwhile endeavor.
If we managed to patch up 380 between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, that would put us well in favor with the local community. |

I think that it would be a great idea to start some thing like that, anything from helping people that need it with small tasks or clean up like you mentioned. The whole voluntering to fill pot holes though seems a bit @@$#!, dont we pay taxes for that(properly enginered roads)? and we do pay for everything that our cities supply, to me filling pot holes is paying twice, but I do feel that if those that dont have a loud voice are ignored that that has major reprocustions in a comunity over time.
Sorry about the hole pot hole thing it seems to be stuck under my nail, I like the idea, think it could be something pretty wonderfull. |

I would help pick up trash if we adopt a highway. We could volunteer at a homeless shelter, or in a hospital visiting patients (atheists and others). Some libraries have volunteers in adult literacy or English as a second language. This would be good for others and for us, personally and as a growing organization. We would want to be sure we had enough workers to keep it going without falling to much on a few people.
