We thought some of you may be interested to know about Fossil Fest of Iowa at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. You can come to Capanna Coffee for our morning meetup, then go to CR for Fossil Fest. What more could you want out of a day? The 1st Annual Fossil Fest of Iowa is a free kick-off event open to the general public. Learn from area amateur paleontologists speaking about dinosaurs, giant ground sloths and other Iowa fossils during talks at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm. At 3pm, Mike Henderson from the Burpee Museum in Rockford, IL will give the keynote talk titled “Jurassic Jackpots: Burpee Museum’s Dinosaur Discoveries.” Door prizes will be awarded at the beginning of each talk. See full-size replicas of a T. rex skull and Allosaurus skull. Touch fossil bones of “Laura, the Kid Dinosaur” and enjoy other fossil displays, including many fossils from Iowa. Visit science-related vendors and enjoy activities for children. The high school is located at the corner of Cottage Grove Ave & Forest Dr SE. Park in the north parking lot off Forest Dr and follow the signs to the cafeteria. You can arrive and leave at any time, but we hope you’ll stay the whole day! If you have further questions after visiting our web site below, contact Don Johnson at 319-213-1390 or email donald-johnson@mchsi .com. Not responsible for accidents. In our ongoing effort to build partnerships, the IS is again teaming up with the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City's Secular Humanist group for a joint meetup. Professor Evan Fales of the UI Department of Philosophy will join us for a discussion of his participation in "My Ways Are Not Your Ways: The Character of God in the Hebrew Bible," a conference at Notre Dame last month that addressed the charge made by the “new atheists” (including the "Four Horsemen": Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, and Hitchins) that Old Testament Biblical religion is immoral. Three atheist philosophers presented the charge at this conference; five theistic philosophers and two Bible scholars offered defenses. You can read more about this conference at http://www.nd.edu/~c prelig/conferences/H ebrewBible.shtml. (Link updated). The paper that Evan presented at this conference, “Satanic Verses: Moral Chaos in Holy Writ”, along with other papers and comments from the conference, will be published by Yale in a book tentatively entitled Divine Evil? The Moral Character of the God of Abraham.

The last bowling meetup went over pretty well, and there were several people who wanted to come but had to cancel, so we'll do it again on Sunday at October 18th at 2:00. Colonial Lanes will again be our choice of venue and, if we're lucky enough, maybe Melissa will come again to show how to pull off all those trick shots she accidentally did last time in mini-golf . (how do you score a hole-in-one on the wrong hole, anyway?) Families are encouraged to attend. One other change from before will be that IS will pay the full cost for bowling. Woohoo! See you then!

DON'T USE ONLINE MAPPING FOR DIRECTIONS. You will be off about 12 miles. From I-80: Go West on I-80 and take exit 216 (Kinze exit). Go South on M avenue. The first stop sign is about 3 miles down the road (3 mile corner), continue South to the second stop sign, which is the Millersburg turn for F52. Continue South, at the bottom of the hill is 288th DR. Go East. When in the neighborhood continue veering left when given the option. We are the second to last house on the right, a tan ranch. 2246 is the house number. From Williamsburg: Go south out of town toward Parnell on 149. When in Parnell continue on 149 to the West. After 3 miles 149 will come to a T and continue South to North English, here you want to go North. Take your first right onto 288th DR. When in the neighborhood continue veering left when given the option. We are the second to last house on the right, a tan ranch. 2246 is the house number. For GPS buffs out there, 288th DR's coordinates are: Lat: 41.58570934129348 Lon: -92.06506490707397 Jupiter's moons (among other celestial bodies) are coming into view, and Stephen has graciously opened his house for a stargazing party! Bring your telescopes, chairs, a jacket, and prepare to be blown away! We'll have a potluck situation, where guests are encouraged to bring food. All Iowa Secularists and A-Team members and their families are welcome to come.

Since our beginning of the summer picnic went over well, we thought we would try an end of the summer picnic, also. Like last time the IS will supply meat, buns, condiments, etc. Please feel free to bring a side dish of your choice. As always, families are encouraged to come and we will have a few lawn games to play, but you're also welcome to bring anything to try out. Of course, the playground will not be far away either. We will again be at the Deer Run Shelter at F. W. Kent Park, just west of Tiffin, IA (where the last picnic was held). Park information, including a map and driving directions, can be found here.
