The call has gone out to everyone in the community to help with the flood cleanup before winter. The volunteer effort is still going on, but volunteers seem to be getting more scarce. The cool weather is a reminder that winter will be upon us before we know it and some people affected by the flood may not be in a situation to deal with it. This is a good opportunity for the Iowa Secularists to come together and help out.

This will be the first meetup event to get the Iowa Secularists together to help with the flood relief efforts. We will try to schedule as many as possible before the winter. Scott Stulken will be heading up this event. If anyone else has a Saturday open and would like to be in charge of getting people together for the sign up, please let me know and I can schedule the event for you.

This is part of the "Push" event that The City of Cedar Rapids, AmeriCorps VISTA, Hands-On Disaster Recover, United Way, Rebuild and Grow and several other volunteer organizations are organizing.

We will be meeting at the Salem Church parking lot for sign up. This is not a church sponsored event, only the meeting place for it. Once every one is there, registration will begin and people will be assigned jobs. I can only assume that the organizers will do their best to assign us somewhere as a group. We have no set time for how long people have to be there, so please come even if it's for a few hours.

There are many jobs that need to be done: Gutting homes
Mowing/Cleaning yards
Securing doors and windows for winter
Food and Water distribution
Volunteer sign-up
Running tools and other miscellaneous errands

A flyer better explaining the event can be found here.

The First Friday Social for September will be held at the home of Niles and Carol. This is going to be the usual casual affair. Come, hang out, meet Iowa Secularist members, talk, laugh and have fun. Children are welcome to come and enjoy as well.

Niles and Carol will provide disposable plates, cups, and utensils. Everyone should bring a snack and/or drinks to share and will be expected to take any leftovers home. (Please remember to take your leftovers with you. It makes clean up so much easier on the hosts.) These socials are suppose to be easy on both the hosts and the guests so simple, easy snacks are welcome. Also, plan on this being a snacking event, not a dinner. Finally, this is a no-shoe home, so be prepared to remove your shoes at the door.

As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come.

Due to overwhelming demand and a wonderful turn out for the first event, we are planning another after work disc golf special. This time we will be at Jones Park, which is a little more difficult, but not impossible. The water traps are a bit more clear cut and not a marsh that will swallow all who dare enter. They will just wash you and your disc away instead.

We'll be meeting at 6ish and we'll be waiting by the parking lot. Anyone interested in getting some tips on throwing before we get started should try to show up at 6. Once again, we'll have extra discs for those that need to borrow some.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. We have experts, newbies and every type of player in between. It will be throw how ever and where ever you feel comfortable and keep track of your own score if you want. This is a completely casual get together.

Directions:
If you google map "Jones Memorial Park Cedar Rapids IA" google will work much better showing you where it is than if you type in the address.

From 380, go East on Wilson Ave. (Right if coming from the South, Left if coming from the North.)
After the 4 way stop with the Dairy Queen on the corner, start looking for the brown sign that points to the disc golf course on the right side of the street.
Turn where the brown sign says to turn and go to the end of the road to the parking lot.
We'll be there waiting for you.

You can also get there from C St.
Just turn right on to Wilson Ave and you'll see the signs for the park on your left.

Hope to see you there.

It is a sad day for the lovely, corn-filled state of Iowa. Kelly McMahon is leaving to return to the hurricane ridden state of Florida. I have decided in order to properly mourn for the loss of Kelly that I must host a party that involves beer and pizza, because what else do you do in Iowa? (Cow tipping doesn't actually work and only ends badly for the tipper - usually with a combination that involves mud, poo, and shotgun blasts.)

So we will be having a potluck at my place. I will provide the supplies to make small personal pizzas that we will then put on the grill to cook. Also, I'll have some beer, wine and pop (and yes, it is called pop here) available. Please bring more food and drinks as gluttony is never a sin and always encouraged by atheists!!!

This is a family-friendly gathering. We will have a Wii for kids and if the weather permits - Ladderball outside. I have two dogs that are medium size and very excitable. Please feel free to be stern with them and to let me know if they are bothersome. We also have a cat, but we try to do our best to deal with the allergens before hand.

RSVPs will be required so I can plan the food and drinks accordingly.

To any new people or members who hesitate to attend because they haven't met Kelly, just remember, this may be the last time you have a chance to meet her. And just think, if she ever becomes famous or wins the lottery you'd really be kicking yourself. Not to mention the fact that she is awesome and you'd just be missing the chance to bask in the glow of her awesome-ness.

Due to requests to have the regular third Thursday meetup on the north side of town more often we are going to give Biaggi's a try. Not surprisingly, the woman on the phone had no idea what I was saying when I said Iowa Secularists, so the reservation is under Lori Griffith. When I show up, I'll let them know again that it's for the Iowa Secularists, but I can make no promises that they will have that down.

This will be the usual gathering of the godless that will probably involve Jesus jokes and an overall good time. As always, everyone is welcome to come and enjoy good food and even better company.

We continue our tour through non-flood ravaged parts of Iowa City/Coralville with a stop at the Edge Restaurant & Tavern in Coralville. It is conveniently located on 1st Avenue right off of the Interstate 80 Coralville exit. They have a wide selection of beverages, their appetizers are great, and their take on the New Orleans classic - rice and beans - is IMHO fantastic (or, at least it was when I was last there). Come one, come all for good food and even better conversation.

Dinners, coffee breaks, bike riding, pizza parties, and now disc golf. This month seems to be the time to find something fun to do with the Iowa Secularists.

This is just a trial run of disc golf to see how much interest there is in playing. We will be meet between 6:00 - 6:15 at the new course in Hiawatha at Fay Clark Park (Directions below). This will be an event for all skill levels. It's a relatively easy course, and we will have plenty of extra discs, so if you've never played before, come on out and learn. If you've never hung out with us before, come on out and experience the awesome-ness that can only be found at an Iowa Secularist meetup.

If you can't make it to this event, but would like to see another disc golf outting arranged, please let me (Lori Griffith) know when and/or where you would like to have another disc golf meetup.

Directions:
From I-380 take Boyson Rd west.
Turn right on 18th Ave or north.
Go to the end of the road, on the left is the Sports Zone, the 30 acres to the west and north will be the park.

I know this is kind of late notice, but I'm planning a bike trip up to the infamous Joensy's in Center Point.

We'll be starting out at the Boyson Rd. parking lot for the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and riding about 13 miles up to Center Point to enjoy some lunch. We'll then ride on back to Boyson Rd. Even if you don't want to go all the way to Center Point, please feel free to come along and ride as far as you'd like. Maps of the trail can be found here www.linncountytrails.org.

As always, everyone is welcome to come regardless of skill level. This is a casual ride meant for socializing and fun. We will be going at a pace comfortable for everyone.

Please remember to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments about this ride. This will be the first bike trip I've planned, so suggestions (for this one or another one) are always welcome.
