Due to a large number of requests, we will be going to see Oliver Stone's new movie W. this Saturday. The movie starts at 8:30, so we will begin meeting in the lobby by the bathrooms at 8:00. Go ahead an buy your tickets before meeting us in the lobby. We will go into the theatre at exactly 8:15 so if you show up after that, just head to the theatre. As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. I've read mixed reviews on this movie, but we'll just have to check it out for ourselves. www.iowasecularist.o rg

This is our usual 3rd Thursday Social scheduled early this time so I didn't miss the reservation at Leo's again. (You're welcome Ken. ) For anyone who hasn't made it to one of our events or is nervous about mingling with a group of heathens, these dinners are one of the best ways to meet the us. There's always a variety of people and conversations and a good time is had by all. Hope to see everyone there! www.iowasecularist.o rg

The responses to these Cleanup efforts have been awesome -- our members have been getting a lot done for this great city, and it's really helping to spread the word. That word being "Secularist" which is fun to define to people unfamiliar with it. At any rate, we'll be meeting at the Salem Church (225 1st Ave, at 10AM) as with the last few events. There is lots of work to be done, including gutting houses for inspection, mowing lawns, moving possessions (sometimes large) out of the houses, distributing food and water, and more. Winter is approaching soon, so there is no time to waste! We've been having a lot of fun, so if reasons like "helping out fellow human beings" or "giving the IS a good standing in the community" aren't quite persuasive enough, join us for a good time and to get to know each other better. Please RSVP as soon as you know whether you'll be able to make it or not. This will help in deciding what the best use of our group will be. Thanks, and see you soon! - Scott

Since Wehrenberg finally decided to post showtimes for this weekend, we have a time for Religulous. This is the Bill Maher documentary about religion. While you may not agree with Bill Maher or his documentary style (heard it's very Michael Moore-ish), meeting up with fellow secularists is always a good time. The movie starts at 7:50, so plan on getting there and getting a ticket at 7:30. After you've got your ticket, go into the main lobby and we'll be waiting next to the bathrooms. I'll wear my big, scartlet Dawkins 'A' shirt for anyone not familiar with the group. We will all go in together at 7:45 exactly, so if you're late, ya gotta look for us in the theatre. If people are interesting in hanging out and discussing the movie afterwards, we'll figure out where to go then. As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come! Hope to see you there. www.iowasecularist.o rg

Time to be thinking about another First Friday Social at Java Creek. Unlike the ones hosted at houses, Java Creek will be our host for the evening so you won't need to bring food or drinks. They have live music on Fridays and it looks like our entertainers for the evening will be Dan and Cindy Caraway - again! While this event is mainly about socializing, when I did listen to them last time they were awesome. Since Java Creek doesn't take reservations and Friday nights are busy, seating is always interesting. We may have to split up into a couple of groups, but it never seems to be a bad thing as people can then move between groups and have a chance to talk with everyone. As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. Good food, good coffee, good music and good conversation. Why wouldn't you come? www.iowasecularist.o rg

The call has gone out to everyone in the community to help with the flood cleanup before winter. The volunteer effort is still going on, but volunteers seem to be getting more scarce. The cool weather is a reminder that winter will be upon us before we know it and some people affected by the flood may not be in a situation to deal with it. This is a good opportunity for the Iowa Secularists to come together and help out. The turnout last Saturday was very heartening, and it felt awesome to give back to the community on behalf of the IS. We will try to schedule as many as possible before the winter. I will be heading up this event. If anyone else has a Saturday open and would like to be in charge of getting people together for the sign up, please let me know and I can schedule the event for you. This is part of the "Push" event that The City of Cedar Rapids, AmeriCorps VISTA, Hands-On Disaster Recover, United Way, Rebuild and Grow and several other volunteer organizations are organizing. We will be meeting at the Salem Church parking lot for sign up. This is not a church sponsored event, only the meeting place for it. Once every one is there, registration will begin and people will be assigned jobs. You are welcome to work as long as you desire or are able. There are many jobs that need to be done: Gutting homes Mowing/Cleaning yards Securing doors and windows for winter Food and Water distribution Volunteer sign-up Running tools and other miscellaneous errands P.S. Let me (Scott) know if you need directions. RSVP early! RSVP often! Thank you!

I know, I know I'm way late on planning this. Don't worry though - I won't burn in hell for it. This is the usual third Thursday social dinner. Because Leo's was already booked (3 weeks ago even) and I ended up getting distracted and didn't find a place on the south side that takes reservations, we are at Biaggi's again. Hopefully people haven't completely filled their schedules and can stop by for a few laughs and a good time. As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. If you've been hesitant in joining in with the Iowa Secularist meetups, these dinners are the best time to stop in and meet everyone. Look forward to seeing you there! www.iowasecularist.o rg

So this is a meetup that still needs the details, but I decided I needed to get it scheduled. The plan is to meet at Turkey Creek in Coralville for another round of disc golf. Once again, we'll have extra discs for those who need them. Also, no skill is required to play - just the ability to enjoy a walk in the park with a bunch of fun-loving atheists. Everyone will be required to make one "Kelly-style" throw to honor her memory. Yes, she may still technically be alive but as long as she's in Florida, she's dead to us Iowans. After this round, the plan is to find a place for dinner. Since I'm not overly familiar with the Coralville area, suggestions on where to go would be appreciated. Please email me any ideas you have. Once I find a place, I will update this description so please check back. Cedar Rapids to Turkey Creek: Short Directions: I380 south. Left at Exit 4 (North Liberty). Right on N. Dubuque St. Left at Coralville Lake and Dam Area sign. Course is 2nd right after the Dam (1/4 mi.) Detailed Directions: (24 min driving time from I380 and Highway 30) I380 south to Exit 4 (North Liberty) 13 mi. Take left (will be on Penn St) Go into North Liberty to N. Dubuque St 2 mi. Right on N. Dubuque st. 4 mi. Look for sign on left that says "Coralville Lake and Dam Area" Take a left. You will be on West Overlook Drive. Follow the "Dam" signs to the Coralville Dam 1 mi. You will drive over the spillway and the dam. Turkey Creek course is second right after the dam (about 1/4 mi). Click for a map. Iowa City to Turkey Creek: From I-80, north on Dubuque St. 2.5 miles Right to Coralville Reservoir You will drive over the spillway and the dam. Turkey Creek course is second right after the dam Meeting Place: Tee one is just inside the park on the left. There is a wood bulletin board by the tee where we can meet Little known fact: On the road from Dubuque St. to the dam is the Funcrest tackle and bait shop (on the right). This shop has the best selection of golf discs in the area! As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. These disc golf meetups are always a good time for everyone, so if you're even a little bit interested it will be worth your time to come on out and throw some discs. www.iowasecularist.o rg
