On Saturday, February 7th, we will try again for the Iowa Secularists Winter Solstice Soiree at the Drake Municipal Observatory! We won't be able to view the solstice sky, but will still enjoy the Observatory, the company of other Iowa Secularists, and hopefully view the February 7th sky! For those who have already registered, your reservation is still in place. If you will not be able to attend at the rescheduled date, please let me know so we can refund your tickets. For those who would not have been able to attend on December 20th, we are reopening the registration so you can still join us! Please see below for information on how to reserve a ticket!

We will begin at 7pm with hors d'oervres followed by a tour of the observatory and a presentation. We will then have the opportunity to view the night's sky at about 8:30pm, weather permitting.

This event is semi-formal and will require a ticket for admittance.

Please note that the telescope must be kept at cool temperatures, so the observation portion of the evening will be as cold as it is outside on February 7th.

For more information on the Observatory, please visit the website here. This website also includes a page with directions to the Observatory which is located at the Waveland Park Golf Course in Des Moines.

Tickets are $30 per person. To purchase a ticket, please use the PayPal link on the website at www.iowasecularist.org or send a check to Iowa Secularists, P.O. Box 883, Iowa City, IA 52244. Please have all tickets purchased or arrangements made by February 4th so that we may plan accordingly.

This is the First Friday Social for February. This is going to be the usual casual affair, but at a new house. Come, hang out, meet Iowa Secularist members, talk, laugh and have fun. Children are welcome to come and enjoy as well.

The host will provide disposable plates, cups, and utensils. Everyone should bring a snack and/or drinks to share and will be expected to take any leftovers home. (Please remember to take your leftovers with you. It makes clean up so much easier on the hosts.) These socials are suppose to be easy on both the hosts and the guests so simple, easy snacks are welcome. Plan on this being a snacking event, not a dinner. Also, our host has a couple of feline friends.

As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come.

Good news everyone!

The United Way/Americorps folks are back from their home-construction training in New Orleans, and are at work on the rebuilding phase of downtown Cedar Rapids. We will be putting in new floors, new walls, and all sorts of other things. But those that really dug the destruction, fear not -- I'm told that there is still some mucking to be done, so we will likely be doing some of both.

For those that are new, there is a liability waiver that will need to be signed, and one must be current on their tetanus shots. Gloves, a facemask, goggles, and long pants/sleeves are all good things to bring onto the job. Despite the hard work and sometimes gross conditions, these have been very enjoyable events, so I encourage all who are able to give it a shot!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a message or give me a call at (952) 201-7893. (Actually, please *do* hesitate between the hours of 10 pm and 8 am. )

Looking forward to rolling up my sleeves with you folks again!

This is our monthly meetup at Capanna Coffee on the pedestrian mall in Iowa City. The topic for the day can be

1. how to spend ventured capital on a limited partnership without a detailed analytical fiduciary perspective.

2. Just show up, have some coffee with like-minded persons and slowly wake up to a glorious weekend full of promise.

3. Just show up and we promise not to hurt you , or

4. Just show up.

See you then!

Hey heathens, it's time for the Cedar Rapids dinner once again. Leo's has become impossible to book, so here we are at Naso's again. I was given the option of requesting a waiter/waitress but I left the option open - apparently though Kat is one of the two that do Thursday evening parties, so we'll see what happens... I know a few of you were smitten.

To any of the folks that haven't made it out to one of our events, these dinners are always a great chance to get to know us.

As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come!

After reviewing the current and predicted weather conditions for the entire state of Iowa, we have decided to cancel the event for this evening. The National Weather Service is predicting some pretty nasty conditions for this evening and we would prefer to not have you all out on the roads if that is the case. We are already talking about plans to reschedule the event - we will not be able to see the actual solstice sky at that point but we wouldn’t be able to do that tonight anyway with all of this cloud cover! Please check back here for more details on the rescheduled event. You may also email jsabeliowasecularistorg with questions.

On Saturday, December 20th, we will have our first Iowa Secularists

permitting.

This event is semi-formal and will require a ticket for admittance.

Please note that the telescope must be kept at cool temperatures, so the observation portion of the evening will be as cold as it is outside on December 20th.

For more information on the Observatory, please visit the website at http://www.drake.edu/artsci/physics/observatory.html. This website also includes a page with directions to the Observatory which is located at the Waveland Park Golf Course in Des Moines.
