In our ongoing effort to build partnerships, the IS is again teaming up with the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City's Secular Humanist group for a joint meetup.

Professor Evan Fales of the UI Department of Philosophy will join us for a discussion of his participation in "My Ways Are Not Your Ways: The Character of God in the Hebrew Bible," a conference at Notre Dame last month that addressed the charge made by the “new atheists” (including the "Four Horsemen": Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, and Hitchins) that Old Testament Biblical religion is immoral. Three atheist philosophers presented the charge at this conference; five theistic philosophers and two Bible scholars offered defenses. You can read more about this conference at http://www.nd.edu/~cp.... (Link updated).

The paper that Evan presented at this conference, “Satanic Verses: Moral Chaos in Holy Writ”, along with other papers and comments from the conference, will be published by Yale in a book tentatively entitled Divine Evil? The Moral Character of the God of Abraham.

Is anyone else from Cedar Rapids going to this? We could carpool and save gas money.

    •  It was great fun! The prof. was wonderfully articulate yet not over my head. I'm still thinking about a lot of the themes and side tangents from last night. I look particularly forward to having more of a chance to talk to a bunch of you folks in the future! (Also, I finally had a good productive discussion w/ my mom last night as I summarized the meetup for her- we understand eachother a little better now and she's open to coming to things like this in the future with me. Discussions like this really help open pathways of communication for me, and remind me how to be thoughtful instead of turn into a-hole Hitchens mode like the stubborn brat I can be, lol.) Thanks, y'all made my week. :)
    •  Excellent presentation by UI Philosophy Professor Evan Fales followed by lively discussion of the entire group. After two non-break hours, folks were still wanting to continue discussing the topic. Participants came from several towns in eastern Iowa, including Davenport, Washington, Cedar Rapids, and the Iowa City area.
