Hello everyone,
As many of you already know, minister Ray Comfort is planning on distributing copies of
On the Origin of Species with his own pro-creationism intro shortly before the sesquicentennial of the original book's publication at 100 top universities across the nation (specifically, Nov. 19). The 100 universities, I assume, include UCSD and possibly SDSU (although I don't have Comfort's list, which seems to be a secret). Anyway, I'd like to counter this B.S. with pro-evolution literature of some kind. Michael Shermer of Skeptic Magazine suggests that we distribute his "How to Debate a Creationist" booklet, which wholesales for only $3 each, with free shipping. My goal is to raise enough money for 1,000 copies and Dr. Shermer tells me he will help us with this through the Skeptics Society, if need be. I am willing to put my money where my mouth is and match each contribution I receive up to a total of $300. Also, Dr. Shermer is confident that he knows enough students at these two schools to help us hand out the booklets, in case too many of us are at work on the proposed date.
Alternatively, the NCSE, Dr. Kenneth Miller (Brown U.), and others are working on flyers specifically rebutting Ray Comfort's claims. If these are completed in time, we could print out a bunch of copies at Kinko's or wherever, which would be a lot cheaper than booklets and more portable. Or, we could do a 30/70, 40/60, or whatever mixture of booklets to flyers, the ratio being determined by a vote.
Here is the tentative meetup info, assuming we raise enough money:
Where: UCSD (Price Ctr. or wherever we find Ray Comfort's people) and SDSU (Aztec Steps)
When: Nov. 19, 8am-5pm or until we run out of handouts
Would giving people food cheapen our message? Probably, but we could bring something for ourselves and even tents w/tables and chairs for comfort, if the school allows for that (I know SDSU does)
I hope to hear back from you if you have any suggestions/comments/complaints.
Thanks,
John
