Hi folks, Come on by Saturday between 2pm and 6pm to check out the Fab Lab and learn more about all the things you can create there as a member! For the science, engineering, artists, craftspeople and the folks that just like to make things on this list, I'd like to announce that the Fab Lab is offering memberships starting later this month. The Fab Lab is a workspace in the City Heights area that has equipment normally only available to people in industrial settings that anyone in the community can use to make robots, furniture, jewelry, electronics gear, prototypes, stencils, artwork and almost anything else you can think of making. The lab has a shop bot, laser cutter, modela, vinyl cutter, complete electronics bench with soldering irons and hookups for your computers. Any designs you can make on your computer can be sent to these machines to be cut out to make anything from custom vinyl wall art decorations and computer cases to custom computer desks. If you've always wanted to make something for yourself that doesn't exist and didn't have the space or equipment to do it, the Fab Lab is the place to let your imagination go free. If you are an engineer, programmer, artist with illustrator experience, experienced shop bot user or small business owner with experience, we may be able to work out a reduced membership fee in exchange for volunteer hours. Attention all members! The San Diego chapter of the United Coalition of Reason is about to go live with the advertising campaign that has taken other cities throughout the country by storm. Please check out this link for an example. There has already been local coverage about the billboard: http://www.fox5sandi ego.com/news/kswb-at heist-billboard,0,91 2957.story http://blogs.sandieg o6.com/blogs/balance dviews/archive/2009/ 11/12/4267435.aspx http://www.signonsan diego.com/news/2009/ nov/12/billboard-get s-word-to-nonbelieve rs/?dsq=22830587#com ment-22830587 As part of this campaign, Debbie Skomer has invited all of our members who can make it to be a part of a publicity photo at 11 am sharp on November 14th. I encourage everyone that can make it to please attend. The photo will take place in front of their new billboard on the south side of Hwy 8, just east of 70th street on Alvarado Rd. in La Mesa. Park at the 70th Trolley station and walk 100 yards east. The billboard will look something like this: http://scatheist.fil es.wordpress.com/200 9/01/6a00d8341c51c05 3ef010536e4758b970b- 450wi.jpg Here are the coordinates to the trolley station nearby and directions to the billboard from there: Directions to the Billboard: The billboard is on Alvarado Road which runs along the south side of Hwy 8. The billboard is just east of the 70th St/Lake Murray Blvd exit. Head east on Alvarado Rd along the south side of Hwy 8. There is a trolley and bus transit center near the billboard called the 70th St Trolley Station. There is a large parking lot at the station. Park there! It is an easy 1/10th of a mile walk east to the billboard. (There is no parking along Alvarado Rd in this area.) Please feel free to contact me for more information. Debbie has also suggested lunch or coffee at DZ Akins afterward. It would be a good opportunity to meet the leaders/organizers of other secular groups throughout San Diego. I am still trying to get the day off to be there. If any assistant organizer is willing to organize this event please contact me. Debbie is taking care of most everything. We just need a contact person for our members in case I cant go. -Peter Here is an excerpt from the San Diego Coalition of Reason press release: Join us for a once in a lifetime photo opportunity! November 14th at 11 AM (Dress like a San Diegan!) On November 14th, at 11 am, members of all nine organizations of the San Diego Coalition of Reason, will be assembled beneath our billboard for a photo that will be used on our local website and perhaps on the national website, Unitedcor.org. Our members include: Atheist Coalition of SD, Humanist Association of SD, Humanist Fellowship of San Diego, Rational Thought at UCSD, SD Atheist Parenting, SD New Atheists, SD North County Brights, SD Secular Humanist Outreach, SDSU Secular Student Alliance. Bring your friends and family!

Okay, we have had R Rated Trivia at Wit's End, regular Trivia Night at Shakespeare, this time around it's Music Trivia Night! Think you know music? Here is your chance to flex the mental muscle and impress your fellow non-theists. It all takes place at Shakespeare Pub & Grill, again, I'll try and hold two tables for our group like last time. I will try to get the same two tables like the last meetup, out on the deck, it's getting cooler out there so dress accordingly. Last time we were able to seat ten members at the two tables, it was tight though, so I'll limit the RSVP to ten. It's a free country though so if you got nothing going drop by if you wish, I just cannot promise an open seat. Shake's website: http://www.shakespea repub.com/quiznight. php

As I was flipping through this month's issue of San Diego Magazine I noticed that the Natural History Museum is doing a Charles Darwin exhibit starting on the very same day I scheduled our Reuben H. Fleet Science Center meetup. So, I was thinking maybe we could reschedule the science center outing and walk across the way to the premier of "Evolution Revolution" instead! Darwin: Evolution | Revolution Explore the life and work of Charles Darwin, the biologist whose revolutionary theories on natural selection and evolution changed the face of science forever. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publishing of On the Origin of Species. In addition to Darwin’s own manuscripts, notebooks, letters, artworks, and personal objects, the exhibition also contains fossils, taxidermy mounts, and living specimens. Curator of Herpetology at the San Diego Natural History Museum Bradford Hollingsworth, Ph.D., and Mark Wheeler, Ph.D., Philosophy Department Chair at San Diego State University are co-curators of the exhibition in San Diego. Exhibition Highlights: * Darwin’s original magnifying glass serves as an iconic object that exemplifies the simple tools that Darwin used “to let Nature come to him.” * Notebooks and letters charting the development of his thinking and the social climate within which he struggled to develop his theory. * Darwin’s pistol and his Bible–the first time these items have been together since Darwin’s five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, the journey which Darwin called the most important event in his life and confirmed Darwin’s career as a naturalist. * Actual specimens collected by Darwin—beetles, butterflies, moths, bugs, and various fossils. * Fossils and dramatic mounted specimens of the uniquely American modern animal groups Darwin saw, including sloths, rheas, and armadillos. Origin of the Species * An elaborate reconstruction of Darwin’s study at Down House, where he refined his theory of evolution and completed On the Origin of Species. * Contemporary examples of modern evolutionary research, and a section addressing various controversies that have arisen surrounding the theory since its debut. * ...and more fascinating features Admission: Adults: $16 Seniors 62+: $14 Students w/ID and Youths 13-17: $11 Children 3-10: $10 Let's have some fun learning more about Darwin and maybe decide on a good place to get a bite afterward. Hope to see you there!

I know this is short notice, but go ahead and cancel your other plans because this will be way more fun! Let's meet at the Morley Field Disc Golf course! For those new to the concept - it's like miniature golf, only you're throwing Frisbee-like discs into a basket instead of aiming tiny balls towards holes. ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME - we're here to have fun, not win trophies. You can learn more here: http://morleyfield.c om/fee-and-course-ru les/ Greens fees are $3 a person, and it's another $1.50 to rent a disc. It'll take about three hours to play all the holes. There is a 6-person-per-group limit, but we can split into however many groups are needed and just sort of mingle them as we play. We'll meet at 11 a.m. in the parking lot, wait about 15 minutes for the stragglers to show up and then head over to the Pro Shop at 11:15 to pay. I've only been once before, and if I remember correctly, they wanted you to leave behind your driver's license when you rent your disc as a sort of collateral. Morely Field is in North Park, near the southern end of Texas Street, although the course is off of Pershing Drive. Directions here: http://morleyfield.c om/fee-and-course-ru les/map-and-directio ns Apologies to Annette for overlapping her event!

Hello, it's me Efren. So I have a buddy that works behind the bar named CJ's at 222 W. Washington Street in the Mission Hills neighborhood. She and I were talking about what would add a little life to the bar on Tue. /Wed. evenings, the nights she works. I mentioned that I have come across a drink that contains tequila, soda water and orange sherbet. I figure it's sort of a "girly" drink because of the orange sherbet. Adriana believes it may be something like a Margarita but she has to work at it and experiment, so we need some test subjects to try this drink for the female type. Sorry the drinks will be regularly priced but you sure would be helping in the construction and assessment of this and maybe other tequila drinks. CJ's looks like a dive bar from the outside but inside it has some nice decor and a patronage of all backgrounds like the workers and students from the UCSD hospital down the street to retirees. Gentlemen, if you are reading this, I guess you can show up, I just thought it's best to get a girl's opinion and input. More info here: http://www.yelp.com/ biz/cjs-club-san-die go
