About The San Diego New Atheists

Hi there,

When I first started this group over a year and a half ago, I was startled by how many people joined it so quickly. Over time it has gained momentum and is now a collection of wonderful people who are inspiring, fun and interesting to talk to. Friendships have formed and every event seems to become even more fun. The assistant organizers have been wonderful, I could never have kept this group going without their enthusiastic help. Thanks especially to Peter, Ulrich, Toan and Joe, who have donated the most time and effort to holding some of our most popular events.

Many of the people who have joined have never joined any atheist groups before. The social focus of this group has attracted many who want the benefits of being part of a community, without the religious undertones.

I was inspired to organize this group after reading a cover article on the New Atheists in Wired Magazine. Follow this link if you'd like to read it yourself:

Times are changing and a number of new atheists are out there, young people who don't believe but still want the benefits of belonging to a community. I'd like to see if it's possible to start a culture of fun, supportive people who are like-minded, intelligent, creative and yes, even Nice. The article in Wired hinted the possibility of creating communities of atheists like what I describe are possible, as long as the focus isn't on discussion of philosophy. Ironic, but there it is.
