Correction: According to the Iowa Secularists bylaws, you must be at least an Associate member ($25 level) to vote in organizational business matters.

All:
I would like to be clear as to why I asked that provisional elections either be postponed or canceled altogether. I don't want to speak for anyone else, but Kyle and I had a lengthy conversation yesterday, and my impression was that he agrees that holding off on elections, at least for now, is the best approach. In any case here is my reasoning: 1) Establishing a quorum. We have 93 registered members on the meetup site. At a minimum, we need to give them a chance to understand the move to chapter structure and be given an opportunity to get credentialed to vote. If they ignore our notices, then that's fine, we can move ahead but I think it only fair to give them an opportunity to have a voice. 2) Are provisional elections even necessary? I'm not convinced. Currently, whatever leadership is in place is the provisional chapter leadership. Eventually, when the chapter structure has been more thoroughly worked out, I am guessing the Board will want uniformity in leadership structure among the chapters, so until we know what that is going to look like it doesn't make a lot of sense to have elections. 3) In a less than a month I will be back in Des Moines. For personal reasons, I would like to be present for any elections. I don't think holding off for several weeks is going to cause any problems. |
