So it seems that the Pope is waging war against secularism, freethought and atheism (At Czech Mass... Monday Sept 28). This should not make us forget, however, that it was and is religion that is the cause of much human evil and misery. I'm of course referring to the Crusades, the Inquisition, the support of Hitler by the Pope's own church, the support of the unspeakably cruel Latin American anti-communist militias, and most recently the incitement of violence against US abortion doctors to name a few. The Pope wants very much for us to forget about these. Let us defy him and remember and relegate religion to the dustbin of history where it belongs.
