Introduction:
"I've been a devout but quiet nonbeliever since age 9 (I'm almost 61), but recently I've come to question my tolerance of faith-based irrationality. This should be a helpful program for me."

  • Minnesota Atheists Meetup Group

"After several meetings, I'd call the group friendly and welcoming. I look forward to developing a more lasting relationship with the group and its members, though I haven't decided how involved in its running I might become. I like the idea of more structured small-group gatherings (like book clubs) to facilitate our understanding of atheism, increase our ability to discuss it with others (both reticent nonbelievers and open-minded believers), and support our efforts to deal with any difficulties associated with being "out and proud"."

  • The Twin Cities Atheists Meetup Group

"This is an already existing and active group that uses Meetup.com to broaden its recruiting net. So it doesn't suffer from the kinds of problems that I've encountered of start-up groups: fluctuating attendance, intermittent leadership, periods of activity followed by lulls, lots of new faces that never return. That's good. In fact, all the successful Meetup groups that I belong to have that profile. All but one of the others have either already expired or are on their deathbeds. I'm not yet sold on the Meetup concept as applied to start-up groups, but it has been good for pre-existing groups."

  • Humanists of Minnesota

"The group continues to be friendly and energetic. Unfortunately, the demographics skew strongly to white, male, older. I'm sure that matches the demographics of humanists generally. Too bad...we may die out before we can change to face of Christian America."
