Dan Barker on "Godless"

Minnesota Atheists will present Dan Barker, co-founder of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and author of, "Losing Faith in Faith," at the Roseville Public Library at 2 PM, January 18th. He has written a new book which updates his previous 16 year old book, "Godless: How An Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists," and will be signing copies after his presentation. The event is free and open to the public.
During our Members Meeting we will be taking nominations for the Minnesota Atheists board of directions. Elections will be held at our February 15, 2009 meeting.

I thought he was a great speaker and gave a unique insight into the thought process of a religious fundamentalist. I purchased his book and have read most of it and found it to be extremely good and shows the fallacies of religious beliefs from a number of different directions. I really enjoyed hearing him speak.

What an engaging speaker! I really enjoyed hearing him speak, and I was pleased about his admonition to be respectful of fundamentalists and their beliefs, and that ridicule wasn't always the best method with them. That's a new perspective for me, and it is a relief. I just want them to respect my right to believe (or not) the way I want to believe (or not). I'm not particularly political, though, and I may not be as supportive as others would like when it comes to banning crêches and such. Personally, I'm able to keep such things in a cultural context and not be offended by them. I got a sense that such a position wasn't really what was expected, however, from both Mr. Barker and from MA members. I assume that I may keep my own expectations, though, so, as I said, I really enjoyed hearing him speak. I wish I would have known (maybe I did, and forgot) that he wasn't speaking till 2pm. I was there at 1pm. I'm not a member (yet), so I found that part tedious.

He shared his personal experience in a conversational manner. He made us feel comfortable with his ideas. This presentation did not just sell books, but it sold an idea.

The person tracking the sales said they sold 39 Godless books plus some of the others they had available. Dan Barker had good analysis of the fundamentalist mind.

We use the Panda Garden, because it is convent and close by the Roseville library. However, the Roseville Library will be closing for remodeling soon. We will then be in a revolving meeting location. Buffet social gatherings will depend on local knowledge of the areas new meeting locations.
