A pair of events co-sponsored by the Greater St. Louis Coalition of Reason (of which our group is a member).

Food, Films, and Freethinking

Join us for two funny, moving, and thought-provoking video performances about the experience of questioning traditional faith.

Julia Sweeney’s Letting Go of God is a one-woman show about the Saturday Night Live alum’s journey through tragedy and Bible study to an em-brace of humanism and hope.

Ryan Paulson’s Pentecostal Wisconsin is a one-man musical play about his unusual upbringing speaking in tongues, and how he discovered the fairer sex and lost his friend Jesus.

Following the film screenings will be an opportunity to discuss what it’s like for those of us who have “let go of God,” or who have hard questions about the faiths we were raised with.

The Greater St. Louis Coalition of Reason (www.stlcor.org), will co-sponsor the series.

A light lunch will be served.

Both programs will be Sunday afternoons, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Very enjoyable. Good film. Unfortunately, older man sitting near me had a malfunctioning listening aid, and it kept feeding back, at times, rather loudly. He fell asleep during the film, and didn't notice it was screeching. (I think he was an Ethical Society volunteer) Poor (tired) guy.
    •  Good movie
    •  Loved the veggie pizza. Even more important, I loved listening to her story. Excellent choice of film.

Very funny and very truthful. Sweeney covered the range of issues most people probably go through from blind religious obedience to doubt and eventual critical thinking. Of particular interest to me was how Christians of all denominations pick and choose what does and doesn't work for them from the Bible. If it makes sense to them, they will automatically reference a passage or two. If another passage is brought up that seems morally untenable or contradictory, they shrug their shoulders and assure you all will be made clear in due time. The anecdote about the Bible stories being "psychologically true" was just plain hilarious. If you don't know or don't have an answer, put out a piece of gobbledygook like that. Sweeney showed a lot of courage putting this together and presenting it on stage. Never saw the lady before but she's got a new fan now.
