Chalk up another one for religion and sex. Almost 600 people were freed from a polygamist compound (416 were children) after a 16-year-old girl called police after being beaten and raped by her 50-year-old "husband".
Why does sex get, well, perverted by religion so often? |

I wonder if the authorities went too far in taking the children away from their mothers, especially since they are victims themselves. That's apparently considered by law to be an extreme step. I don't see why they couldn't just forbid the mothers from taking the children back to the compound.

I don't see why they couldn't just forbid the mothers from taking the children back to the compound. That was a the disturbing icing on an already disturbing cake. My guess is that each case would be looked at since the children may have been kept there because their mothers were there voluntarily and permitted their early marriages. If that is not a case for an unfit mother...... I think also there was an organizational issue of figuring out who was the mother for each of the 416 children. Or the state may be overreaching and not allowing the kids to go back with their mothers. That never happens.... |

Here's the latest:
http://www.washington... The phone calls that triggered a massive raid on a polygamist compound in west Texas -- in which a quavering girl's voice described being forcibly married at 15 -- have been linked to a Colorado woman with a history of making false claims of sexual abuse, according to an affidavit filed in Colorado Springs.A prank call generating a raid of this magnitude astounds me. |

I think we all agree that anyone who beats and rapes someone should go to jail. And if the man is convicted he should certainly go to prison. However, we should respect a person's right to live in a polygamist society. It is not for me. But if you have the time and money for more than one woman or man as the case may be have at it. |

My only issue with polygamy is that in my experience it becomes exploitative far too often. The FLDS has been getting in trouble not for polygamy, but for forcing young women to become married. I don't have a problem with youth marriage in general, but the compulsion involved in these cases leads me to conclude that these acts are immoral. |

Here's the latest: Hmmm. That is a twist. The cops had been watching that place for 4 years, evidently, but had no probably cause to raid the place until that call happened, giving them the cause they needed to raid the place. Even if it was a "prank" call (and assuming that children were "married" to the guy and then forced to "consummate" the marriage immediately, its good the prank happened. If there was nothing illegal going on, then that is bad that the raid happened. Even kookie Mormons deserve habeas protections. |
