Dave Thomas, of"Americans United for the Separation of Church and State", has asked the Atheist Meetup to orchestrate an official meetup for the following event. The 400th anniversary of Galileo's telescope. The following is an official press release identifying details of the events those groups sponsoring it.

(I made the official meetup time at 6:45pm for purposes of gathering outside before hand so the Atheists group members can partake in the event together).

Galileo and the inquisition by Rev. David Kidd

The program is part of the worldwide observance of the International Year of Astronomy, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s telescope.

David Kidd is a Presbyterian minister who taught anthropology before being ordained. Spencer Buckner is professor of astronomy at Austin Peay State University and vice-president of BSAS

    ... would suggest gathering inside the front door in the lobby area. It's fairly spacious and would insure that no one gets missed on the way in. We probably need a volunteer to corral people as they come in. Neither Tania nor I will be there to do it and Charles will probably be preoccupied getting the event organized. -- Dave T.

    Yes, Galileo recanted, but he had already published 1000 books, and the Inquisition was unable to burn them all. Some got out to scientists in other countries. Some 200 years later the Roman Catholic church finally took his book off the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Only in the 1990s did the pope make some half-hearted apologies.
