On November 3, 10 and 17, NOVA premieres Becoming Human a three-part special on human evolution. The series combines interviews with world-renowned anthropologists and paleoanthropologists and the most recent, groundbreaking discoveries with vivid images of our earliest ancestors to present a comprehensive picture of our human past.

Halloween, what better time to try and scare atheists! Maybe we'll host a revival meeting in the back yard this year... much dancing with snakes and chicken feet ;)

Look for the Pastafarian flag on the balcony. Snacks and drinks provided, feel free to bring anything to share. There is still one Peroni in the fridge from last years party, please no more. There's propane, pool, darts, and Foosball. Costumes encouraged, much kudos for most blasphemous.

Parking will be on Wildherd, I'll provide the gate code to those who rsvp.

This is our regular atheist meetup at Jason's Deli. The gathering is mainly social. This event began several years ago with just a handful of us at the Barnes and Noble book store. We outgrew that location years ago and have been at Jason's Deli ever since.

For this event, all types of conversation are welcome. There is usually too large of a group to have one conversation. I recommend that you switch seats periodically to meet new people. Think of it as musical chairs without the music. If you hear someone talking about a topic that interests you, jump on in. There are always new people each week so don't feel shy about meeting someone new.

I hope to see you there!!!

HALVASON Monthly Meeting
Guest Speaker: Professor Katherine Kruse, from the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV
Title of Talk: Wrongful Convictions--Causes and Reforms

Come out to hear Professor Kruse and three law students from the UNLV Innocence Clinic share their perspectives.

Background
Prior to joining the UNLV faculty in 2002, Professor Kuse practiced and taught in a prisoner legal assistance clinic at the University of Wisconsin Law School. She did everything from sentence modifications, direct appeals, and post-conviction motions to divorces and child support modifications for Wisconsin state prisoners. UNLV is one of the few law schools in the country that integrates clinical law teachers into the tenure-track faculty, and joining the faculty here afforded her the opportunity to combine hands-on clinical teaching with the pursuit of academic scholarship.

In 2006, the UNLV law school was contacted by the Utah-based Rocky Mountain Innocence Center (RMIC), which is the innocence project for the states of Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. The RMIC was seeking to build collaborative relationships with law schools in its region to help investigate RMIC cases in all three states. Professor Kruse's interest in systemic reform and criminal justice had drawn her attention to the innocence movement that has developed following the first DNA exoneration in 1989. With the support of the RMIC and the Boyd School of Law, she started the UNLV Innocence Clinic in the fall of 2008.

Current Work
In the clinic, law students investigate claims of wrongful conviction by Nevada state prisoners while taking a seminar that focuses on the causes of wrongful convictions and post-conviction remedies. Last year they also worked on two legislative reform projects to create a statute requiring state agencies to preserve biological evidence for the entire time that a prisoner is serving a sentence and to permit defendants to go back into court to request DNA testing of biological evidence in cases where such testing may prove their innocence. They also seek to provide resources and support for local attorneys who represent Nevada state inmates in post-conviction proceedings.

One of our members, Fae Silver, is graciously opening her home and spectacular back yard to us by hosting a BBQ this Sunday.

Come on out and enjoy an afternoon with your fellow atheists in a beautiful setting. Please bring whatever foods you would like to grill, and any booze if you'd like, and of course, no BBQ is complete without homemade potato salad. Anyone have an old family recipe they can break out? :) This will be potluck style, and you are encouraged to bring things to share.

Please note, this is an adult-only event.

Come out for a Sunday afternoon of BBQ and godless company!

Hello All! It’s Ardath, Cesar’s better three quarters. Once again I am attempting to put together a sewing, knitting, crocheting, and whatever needle craft meet-up. It’s a classic stitch n’ bitch get together. We all bring our latest projects to my house; hang out, trade ideas, and generally chat about whatever comes to mind. Don’t worry if you don’t know a craft, I can teach sewing, knitting and crocheting. Plus, I’m hoping some other arts will be represented as well. Start time is around 7pm and it’ll run til maybe 10 or so.

Munchies and drinks are welcome. Any one who gets drunk will be forced to do wii balance games while the others point and laugh.

This fall, NOVA is celebrating the 200th anniversary year of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his famous book the Origin of Species with three evolution-themed programs. Each film will approach the topic of evolution in a different way. I will post each one so that you may get them on your TV viewing schedules.

To kick off NOVA's fall season on October 6, Henry Ian Cusick (Lost) and Frances O'Connor (Mansfield Park) star in Darwin's Darkest Hour a two-hour scripted drama that presents the remarkable story behind the birth of Darwin's radically controversial theory of evolution and reveals his deeply personal crisis: whether to publish his earthshaking ideas, or to keep quiet to avoid potential backlash from the Church.
