This is our regular atheist meetup at Jason's Deli. The gathering is mainly social. This event began several years ago with just a handful of us at the Barnes and Noble book store. We outgrew that location years ago and have been at Jason's Deli ever since.

For this event, all types of conversation are welcome. There is usually too large of a group to have one conversation. I recommend that you switch seats periodically to meet new people. Think of it as musical chairs without the music. If you hear someone talking about a topic that interests you, jump on in. There are always new people each week so don't feel shy about meeting someone new.

I hope to see you there!!!

Is religion a virus that infects otherwise healthy individuals? That is a question raised by a provocative new book entitled, The God Virus. It is by noted psychologist and student of religion, Dr. Darrel Ray.

Dr. Ray will be in Las Vegas while on a book tour to promote his new work. Come out to see his presentation and learn more about his study. August 2, 1:30- 3:30PM at the the Coffee Bean at 4550 S. Maryland Pkwy.

The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture by Darrel W. Ray, Ed.D.
The book is a ground breaking study of religion and its practical effects. Why are people so clear about the faults and failures of other religions and so blind to those of their own? Learn how religion impacts and influences your life and what you can do about it. See www.thegodvirus.net for more information.

What are others saying?
"Darrel gives an engaging, highly informative, fun, and at points hilarious, presentation. You will be left wishing that there had been more time to explore with him all aspects of this dead-on perspective of religion and its effects on all of us. (You, too, are a vector!) Come prepared for what should be a very lively Q & A. This is a book and lecture you DON'T want to miss!"
----Dennis Horvitz, Host, "NYC Atheists Live! (On Tape)"

Join us for a lively discussion of The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins. As one of the leaders of the movement that has been labeled "New Atheism", Dawkins argues from a scientific and humanistic point of view against the conept of god and religion.

From Scientific American:
Richard Dawkins, in The God Delusion, tells of his exasperation with colleagues who try to play both sides of the street: looking to science for justification of their religious convictions while evading the most difficult implications—the existence of a prime mover sophisticated enough to create and run the universe, "to say nothing of mind reading millions of humans simultaneously." Such an entity, he argues, would have to be extremely complex, raising the question of how it came into existence, how it communicates —through spiritons!—and where it resides. Dawkins is frequently dismissed as a bully, but he is only putting theological doctrines to the same kind of scrutiny that any scientific theory must withstand. No one who has witnessed the merciless dissection of a new paper in physics would describe the atmosphere as overly polite.

Get a taste of what the book holds. Watch this short interview with Dawkins in which he describes his position and touches on some of the highlights.

As always, we will have dinner prepared, along with a wide variety of drinks (alcoholic an non). No need to bring anything, but you can if you'd like.

Please call ahead or e-mail if you need help with directions. There are several detours and construction zones near us, so Google Maps is not reliable at this time.
