NEW UPDATE:
Due to the number of people planning on attending the book discussion, we are going to change the format a little bit. Those of you who are regulars at the Burning Bush know that we normally have food available and we sit around in a circle and talk about the book. With many more people in attendance this time around, that won't be logistically feasible, so this event will be more of a casual gathering, more like a casual party than an organized discussion. There will still be food and beverages available, but not enough room to sit around in one big circle to talk. The purpose will still be to discuss this book and other issues that arise from that discussion, so come prepared , but expect it to be different than normal.
=============================

Join us for a lively discussion of The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins. As one of the leaders of the movement that has been labeled "New Atheism", Dawkins argues from a scientific and humanistic point of view against the conept of god and religion.

From Scientific American:

Richard Dawkins, in The God Delusion, tells of his exasperation with colleagues who try to play both sides of the street: looking to science for justification of their religious convictions while evading the most difficult implications—the existence of a prime mover sophisticated enough to create and run the universe, "to say nothing of mind reading millions of humans simultaneously." Such an entity, he argues, would have to be extremely complex, raising the question of how it came into existence, how it communicates —through spiritons!—and where it resides. Dawkins is frequently dismissed as a bully, but he is only putting theological doctrines to the same kind of scrutiny that any scientific theory must withstand. No one who has witnessed the merciless dissection of a new paper in physics would describe the atmosphere as overly polite.

Get a taste of what the book holds. Watch this short interview with Dawkins in which he describes his position and touches on some of the highlights.

As always, we will have dinner prepared, along with a wide variety of drinks (alcoholic an non). No need to bring anything, but you can if you'd like.

Please call ahead or e-mail if you need help with directions. There are several detours and construction zones near us, so Google Maps is not reliable at this time.

    Someone once said that the universe is stranger than we can imaging. Swimming in a vacuum: http://www.scientificameric.... Clearly not obvious. Neither is any of quantum mechanics. The fact is, is that we do not know, and we do not know what we do not know. There is no evidence that god does not exist. In fact I am not sure that there could be, just as there is no evidence that aliens don't exist.

    Raja, don't try to understand Doug, it may hurt your head. And his definition of atheist is definitely a little different than mine. I am an atheist because I don't believe anything out of just faith. I require reasonable evidence. ;)

    This book is the best. We went to see Dawkins at JPL when this book was released. It was worth the drive to talk to this well-versed man (and get a picture and autograph!)

    I am in Vancouver until the 25th August, but I might make a short trip back for the Meet-UP and process my accumulated mail.

    Doug, I did not get a word of what you said! What?

    "to say nothing of mind reading millions of humans simultaneously." Why that makes as much sense as being able to swim in a vacuum. Oops. You can do that. I am an agnostic. I do not have enough faith to be an atheist. 90% of the universe is dark matter. Or we are simply in a local void of matter. We don't know; we don't know what we don't know.

       Lovely evening. I love that it is close to my house- dont like to travel to meet up.Would have preferred more talk on the book but I am responsible perhaps for directing elsewhere conversations I had.Soooo glad I found this group & can join in.Offerred to make the next meeting at my place.
    •  Even though it was too large to hold a structured group, there were some great side conversations going around about the book. Absolutely a fantastic place to be, and Joe & Sarah are the most gracious hosts!
    •  Had a great time-- Joe & Sarah were great hosts. I think it'd be nice to have some talking points-- like many book clubs have-- to keep us on topic. Even in a larger group, we could always have a few copies of the questions. I don't have a lot of time for reading, so when the conversation tended towards other books, I didn't have much to say.
    •  Did not discuss the book much, but did discuss a large number of topics related to belief. We eventually wandered off into physics and the origin of the species.
    •  The discussions were far reaching, not just about Dawkins book. For me, this just made it better. I will attend the next one, if at all possible.
