Hi everyone,
I would like to first off thank Joe for having taken up the reigns of this group over the last few months. Joe, I?m sure that I speak for all in the group when I say that, its been a pleasure to have gotten to know a bit more about you and sorry to see that you?ll be stepping down as moderator. I will be taking over as moderator of our Reno Atheists meetup group. First off I should apologize for not having been more active early on and for not having been able to attend many meetups during the time that I have belonged to this group. I am planning to take this opportunity to change that and would very much like to get to know more about each of you. As for myself I have been living out here in in Carson City for about 3 years now though I am not originally a native of Nevada. For those of you that might be curious, my world view is atheistic, having been greatly influenced by scientific skepticism, and from a philosophical standpoint sits somewhere between Humanism and Naturalism. Its seems that this group slowly, attracts people who are looking for others in the Reno/Tahoe area that are like minded. While it is evident that the the activity on here varies from user to user, I do not want to lose this group as being a place where people can come to find others in the area who share a similar non-supernatural world view. I have thought a bit about the dynamic of this site and it seems to be tailored to the types of groups that require more in person interaction or those that are very large so that they can sustain a good sized meet up. While I am not suggesting that we stop the meet up component of this group, I think that that is a good thing, I would however like to expand a bit a find out what all of you think about including other aspects to this community. One of the thoughts that I have in mind include the possible creation a blog type community online in which we could share things such as stories of the day, events occurring near us, interesting podcasts or blogs, or just ideas and questions on random topics. Somethings like this would at least keep us actively interacting so that perchance our meetups would attract more members over time. If any of you have any recommendations/ideas which you care to share, please let me know and we can see about how we might incorporate them. As for the meetup aspect of this group, please also send suggestions as to the types of locations you think you would be most willing to go to. I have added a poll on the group site asking what day works best and would like to see how this turns out. Lastly as we explore other avenues of finding the like-minded in our area I would like to recommend that all you have a look at the North West Nevada and Tahoe region Atheists group that Cheryl has set up and the Reno/Tahoe Brights organization which I started not long ago. The links to these sites are posted below. I look forwards to learning more about all of you and your ideas as to where you think this community should go. Best Regard, Tony North West Nevada and Tahoe region Atheists http://groups.yahoo.c... Reno/Tahoe Brights http://brightsnet.org... |

Hi!
Thanks for linking my group. I appreciate your efforts to try to get something going. Speaking just for myself, the easiest way for me to participate in anything is via email. If I have to remember to read a blog or visit a forum, I probably won't do it. Even getting the notes about messages being posted here is sometimes awkward because MeetUp sometimes tells us there's a message and then makes us come over here to the website to read them. I don't get it - the hassle seems unnecessary. Second best is meeting in person. I don't like large groups, and I certainly don't like electing officers and using Robert's Rules - but if some of us can sometimes get together just to converse over coffee or smoothies that'd be awesome.... Since Yahoo! Groups is a free service I will continue to manage my group indefinitely, whether or not I have success with the May get-together. That way, even if you decide to leave as did Joe, we'll still have *something* even if it's almost moribund.... <g> Hope to meet you soon! Cheryl LLR |
