The stoics and epicureans presented presented us with puzzles that we were only partially able to resolve to our satisfaction. John W, wondered why given a goal of being a person without passion would anyone ever engage in any active pursuit, William M. suggested that the importance of fulfilling one's duty was a possible motivating factor in that the stoic wants to try to live rationally in accordance with the natural law of the world as it is possible to be understood by man. Man, the stoics, felt, has a unique role in the cosmos as being that creature that is capable of employing language and perhaps because of that capability can be lead into error. I think we all felt we had barely scratched the surface of stoicism. For those to want to see stoicism through the eyes of a modern writer you might want to read Tom Wolf's "A man in full".
