The philosophy club returns Oct. 5th in an expanded format in which we will hear and discuss two lectures.

1) First we will listen to, and discuss, Aristotle's approach to moral and intellectual virtue.

2) Then time permitting, we will next hear a lecture entitled: Rome, the Stoics and the Rule of Law

Note: The Files section (on the left of this panel) contains outlines of both lectures.

Please arrive by 7:00 p.m. so we can start the first lecture promptly.

The meeting is limited to 15 people so if you are interested : call (Roger Smith) [masked] for meeting location.

Remember: you must be a member to attend (though you can sign up for membership on the evening of the lecture, so come on down).

Talk about this Meetup

I'll be out of town, but this is an excellent topic & I'd like to see more like it.

Who attended?

  • 7 attendees
    •  This is a thoughtgul, responsive group
    •  Knowledgeable people, lively discussion and welcoming atmosphere!
    •  Once again there was a split decision amongst the participants over the advisability of accepting Aristotle's judgement that the highest form of life achievable was that of contemplation. Some thought this was too restrictive (i.e, the life of the mind is not for everyone) while others gave Aristotle a more generous (not necessarily more accurate or more correct) reading in that they were willing to consider Aristotle's position as a recognition that the special capability of humans is their rationality--and that rationality must be employed if we are to achieve our goals in this life.
