“God Loves You”: Aren’t You Tired of Hearing That?
What Does It Mean? Why Are They Annoying Us? How Can We Stop It?

One member who has done street tabling for NYC Atheists told us: “If one more religious person walks by and says ‘god loves you’ to me I’m going to jump over the table and punch ‘em!”

Whoa, there. We’re not sure even these religious people know what these phrases they throw at us mean. Love is an odd concept in the alleged relationship of god and man. Does it mean that god supposedly thinks about you and cares about you—if so, why, in this world of billions of people? Or does it mean love in the physical sense? In which case, isn’t god a dirty old man?

How do we handle the sticky situation when slogans of this type are thrown at us, when the insincerity and phoniness of these phrases are indeed an irritant. And what about “god bless you”--or worse--“I’ll see you in hell” or “blasphemer!” Do we respond with anger or courtesy? Do we deal with the subliminal insult behind the words or do we deal with the actual, sometimes irritatingly kind, words themselves?

How Do You Handle It?

Come to the Tuesday evening Meetup at the Stone Creek Bar and tell us how you deal with the prevalent, all-too-common occurrence of having to deal with other people’s public religious comments and observances! Please, no fisticuffs.

We will also discuss our new bus advertising program, due to debut on June 22rd.
Tell us what you think about us putting our atheist slogans out there in front of people who have been advertising god for generations. Of course, our bus ads are a drop in the bucket compared to the barrage of in-your-face “Jesus Saves” ads that we have endured over the years.

Come, let it all pour out! Vent your annoyance! And help us figure out how we can counteract the volcano of Jesus ads, TV shows and big-tent hollering by the religionists.

EVENT SUMMARY

WHAT: “God Doesn’t Love Us—or, How Our Bus Ads Can Help Drown
