Socrates Said, “The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living…”
So, How Do We Examine Our Lives?
We at New York City Atheists are going to find out!
Dr. Charles Lantz, our NYCA Philosophy group leader, is back from his Atlanta home just in time to guide our Wednesday, May 13th session on this fascinating topic. “We’ll look at what an examined life is,” says Dr. Lantz. “And we’ll consider, how do we examine our lives?
We’ll also consider: Why is it important to examine our lives? What can we gain from it? How much of our lives depends on current forces in society and is beyond our control?
Dr. Lantz, who commutes to New York from Atlanta, has this time brought with him the brand-new Teaching Company course on Socrates. Up to now, we’ve led up to Socrates, examining what philosophy is and how it has figured in history. We will listen to one 45-minute talk on Socrates by a top university Socrates expert and then, fortified by noshies and drinks, we will discuss the meaning of life as seen by this incomparable wise man.
No Homework, No Papers
There are no reading assignments, no homework, no papers to write—just come and listen; there is just the mind-stimulation of new ideas thrown at you by a leading expert and then a roundtable discussion of them with friendly atheist colleagues.
Yes, sometimes the discussion gets heated. We are dealing with life and death topics and ideas that are going to make you think and question.
Dr. Lantz, the gentle and charming academician whose professional expertise is in science, has participated in similar philosophy discussion groups in Atlanta and has found that this kind of learning is a stimulating supplement to our educations, particularly if one’s college education focused on other subjects.
Call Early, Limited Seating
Because we have limited seating in our new meeting location, we are limiting attendance to the first 15 members who respond. The location will be given to you when you call; it is a private residence.
Come, stimulate your brain! Enjoy thrashing out the Big Questions of life with fellow truth seekers.
