This event is being presented by the Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia

Would you check "nonreligious", "atheist" or "agnostic" on religious surveys? Are you passionate about science and skepticism? Are you interested in Unitarian Universalism or Quakerism for their ethical values, but turned off by the supernaturalism that come with them? If your answers are yes, you're a Humanist!

Martha Knox, Celebrant and VP of the Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia gives an interactive talk about organized, philosophical Humanism, which is both a global movement and network of local communities. Currently, HAGP is based in the northern suburbs. The goal of this talk is to attract both new membership and hopefully leadership for new branches of HAGP in Philadelphia neighborhoods.

From the Free Library Calendar of Events:

Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of the bestselling Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism, Susan Jacoby is program director of the Center for Inquiry's New York area branch and the recipient of numerous grants and awards. In The Age of American Unreason, Jacoby offers an unsparing indictment of the American addiction to infotainment and cites this dependency as the major element distinguishing our current age of unreason from earlier outbreaks of American anti-intellectualism and anti-rationalism.

Description:

The Catholic Church had dominated Europe for a millennium, compiling an astonishing record of fraud, self-enrichment, and violence. Into the breach stepped the bold rebels of the Protestant Reformation, who proceeded to compile their own even more impressive record of fraud, self-enrichment, and violence, the like of which Europe had never seen, nor has it since.

Luis Granados is a Washington, DC attorney and a student of religious history. He is currently writing a comprehensive history of religious scandal entitled False Witness: The Story of Organized Religion. From the earliest human sacrifice through today's cartoon riots and "intelligent design," Granados will tell the story of Luther, Calvin, Cranmer, the Thirty Years War and more.

For more information about the speaker, see Luisgranados.com Blog

The introduction and sample chapter of book, False Witness: The Story of Organized Religion, is available at the site.
